As part of Gibson City’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, we will be sharing interviews done by Craig Kummerow. Craig is spending time with some of Gibson City’s Senior Citizens and will be sharing some of their thoughts and memories.
INTERVIEW WITH CAROLYN WILLIAMS by Craig Kummerow
“My name is Carolyn Williams and I’ve lived in GC since I was 3 years old. We moved here from Decatur, IN because my dad, Roy Schlickman, was employed with Central Soya and he was transferred to the Gibson City location. Growing up we lived in a nice neighborhood of Gibson City, just about 3 houses down from the United Brethren Church (formerly on the corner of 9th and Church Streets where there is now an apartment building.) Young girls the same age and me and my sister lived in the area also. I used to get up on Sunday mornings and get myself ready for Sunday School. I used to go on over to the Church and set on the steps and wait on Reverend Hanley to open the doors. As a young adult I was a member of the Junior Women’s Club for several years. I also worked with the Church’s Youth Fellowship program and taught Sunday School. A little later in my married life, my husband Don and I took dance lessons in Bloomington. My husband never could dance and always wanted to, so we ended up taking these classes and had so much fun. The classes involved all kind of dances, including the waltz, jitterbug and the 2-step.”
To celebrate Gibson City’s Sequicentenial Birthday, more interviews will be shared each month. These interviews will be found on WGCY, the Ford County Chronicle, the Ford County Record, the Gibson City Sesquicentennial Facebook Page, and Gibson City Illinois Website.
